Initial Consultation

Chelsea will consult with you and other appropriate people such as family members, teachers, and caregivers to learn more about any/all concerns you may have about your son’s or daughter’s developmental progress as well as their overall physical, mental and/or emotional health.

Screenings

Chelsea believes that Occupational Therapy (OT) screenings play a vital role in efficiently identifying children who may require full OT evaluations, services, additional care and/or interventions.

The brief 15-20 minutes assessments are conducted with individuals and groups across various settings (homes, schools, playgrounds, and more) and age groups

Chelsea’s screenings are free of charge and only require written parental consent.

During the screening process, she will:
Review any/all relevant current/historical information about your child including current/past physical, mental and/or emotional health, issues he/she may be experiencing in school, home, and the like.

Observe your child and conduct quick tests regarding his/her:
Motor coordination (fine and gross)

  • Sensory processing
  • Social and emotional skills
  • Executive functioning
  • Self-care abilities
  • Play skills

Limitations and Considerations

  • Screenings are not meant for progress measurement or treatment planning
  • Results should guide further evaluation, not serve as a definitive assessment
  • Proper implementation and understanding of screening tools is crucial

If she determines your child does not require one-on-one treatment, Chelsea will be happy to consult with you (and/or other healthcare professionals as appropriate) with any/all advice she has about how best to help your child.

If, however, Chelsea  concludes that your child needs a more comprehensive assessment, she will share her finding with you and recommend a full evaluation.

Include, engagement and play, Activity Of Daily Living (ADLs) skills, home environment modifications, community integration and are based on the following principles:

Full Evaluation (If Warranted)

Like other licensed, occupational therapist, Chelsea conducts comprehensive evaluations/assessments, that she uses to determine children’s abilities, challenges, and needs related to performing daily activities.

More specifically, evaluations aim to:

    • Assess your child’s current level of functioning in various areas of daily life
    • Identify strengths and limitations that may affect their ability to perform desired/needed tasks
    • Determine the need and/or extent for occupational therapy services
    • Guide treatment planning and goal setting

Evaluation Process:

The evaluation process typically involves:

    • Reviewing medical history and relevant records
    • Conducting interviews with children and their caregivers
    • Administering standardized assessments
    • Observing the client performing various, relevant tasks
    • Analyzing performance levels of all tasks

Evaluation Components

An OT evaluation consists of several key components:

  1. Profile: A summary of the child’s “occupational” history, experiences, patterns of daily living, interests, values, and needs
  2. Analysis: An assessment of children’s strengths and limitations while performing specific activities

3.  Standardized and non-standardized assessments: These are tools used to measure various, specific issues that may be affecting your child’s ability to complete desired tasks or actions. They include areas such as:

    • Fine and gross motor skills
    • Self-regulation
    • Engagement and Play
    • Sensory processing
    • Cognitive abilities
    • Social and emotional skills
    • Self-care abilities (e.g., dressing, bathing, grooming)
    • Work or school-related skills
    • Play and leisure activities
    • Environmental factors affecting performance

Evaluation Report

Following the evaluation, the occupational therapist:

    • Synthesizes and analyzes the collected data
    • Documents findings in a comprehensive report
    • Develops recommendations and a plan of care
    • Communicates results to the client, family, and other relevant professionals
